For centuries the voices of women were suppressed – in synagogues, churches, mosques, and concert halls. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Jewish women played a prominent role in the musical salons of Western Europe, but it was not until the 20th century that compositions by women would be published and their works heard on concert stages.

Zamir’s performance will celebrate the many women who have created and are now creating songs and compositions based on Jewish texts and themes.  The concert, which is dedicated to the memory of the City of Newton’s former director of Cultural Affairs, Linda Plaut, z’l, and is part of the Linda Plaut Newton Festival of the Arts, will feature music by Nira Hen, Nurit Hirsch, Elana Katz-Chernin, Kirsten Lampl, Sarah Levi-Tanai, Achinoam Nini, Molly Picon, Shulamit Ran, Benjie Ellen Schiller, Judith Shatin, Naomi Shemer and Meira Warshauer.
