Tributes to Larry and Jill Sandberg

Larry and Jill Sandberg

The Zamir Chorale of Boston is delighted to show its appreciation and gratitude to Larry and Jill Sandberg. Since 1973, Larry has not only sung tenor but served as a board member; concert, stage, and merchandise manager; and as interim executive director on multiple occasions. Jill, who joined the alto section in 1992, has been a loyal and gracious presence at the merchandise table and has contributed in countless other ways behind the scenes. We owe much of our success to the heartfelt devotion, commitment, and love that Larry and Jill have given over the years, and we are blessed to have them in our Zamir family.

Please note that there is no charge for online tributes. For sponsorship opportunities, see below. Ticket information will be available in March 2022.

Zamir would not be Zamir without Larry. Thanks to Larry, rehearsals and concerts run smoothly. We sound good and we look good. And we don’t make noise turning pages. And Larry provides recordings to ensure that our message is heard far beyond the here and now. And Jill has been a talented and devoted alto in Zamir for many years. And she has been a wonderful partner for Larry. Larry and Jill are a truly awesome couple. Yes, tenors and altos do mix! Mazel tov on this well-deserved honor for both of you!

Larry….I could tell, in the early tenor sectional days, that this day would certainly come. It is overdue and well-deserved. And Jill, your passion for choral music is infectious. I love just watching how you sing. You actually FEEL the music. Whether with Zamir, Zachor, or working with Hazamir (and even Safam), the dedication you both bring to the game is unparalleled. Audio, video, uniforms, sheet music, usage permission, recordings, sales, risers, and so much more. Another organization would have many people on those tasks….and they would change every couple of years. The fact that you both have made this a life-long love-affair, with each other AND with the choirs, speaks volumes about the selfless champions that you are. MAZEL TOV!!

You are the hearts that beat beneath the surface and the golden thread that keeps it all together. While this is a special night for you – being in the spotlight you usually prepare for others – it is also a special opportunity for all of us who appreciate you to thank you for all you have done to enrich the Zamir Chorale of Boston, the Jewish choral world nationally, and the many offshoots (Zachor, Connie Lecture, etc.) which would not be here without your generosity and dedication. His sound engineer skills and managerial skills have enabled Josh to produce the best quality sound and music for the Chorale.
He has developed a special niche for himself in the organization. Because of Larry Sandberg, the musical quality of Zamir is continuously excellent and remains so to this day.
Everybody in Zamir must surely appreciate that Larry’s efforts and expertise have enabled Zamir to be a quality organization with a great deal to share on an intellectual and emotional level.

Zamir owes a debt of sincere gratitude to this wonderful person. He has worn many hats over the years and it is partially to his credit that Zamir has continued to endure and thrive. You are both so giving–not only to Zamir, but to the people and other musical organizations that perpetuate the values we stand for. Larry–I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your many personal kindnesses, too. They start with your coming to the rescue when my host family ignored me at a Zamir event in Manhattan! When I joined the board, you went out of your way to make me feel welcome–and there’s been so much in between. You know, intuitively, what people need and are feeling and rise to the occasion. Jill and Larry,
There could not have been a more appropriate concert title, “A Better World”, that honors the two of you. Zamir Chorale of Boston is “A Better Chorale” due to the dedicated time you have given to it for all these years — each in your own way. May you enjoy many more years contributing your talents and helping create beautiful music and harmony to the Jewish choral world.

In gratitude for all you do — Mazel tov!

Larry and Jill: Speaking as someone who experiences Zamir from some 1600 miles away (Miami),
I am indebted to both of you for keeping the Zamir flame going strong! As a former TV producer, I know how essential the support staff is to a performer or group– and that is a role that I know
Larry has filled so well for so many years. And from what I’ve heard, Jill has also been an integral part of the team, both on stage and off.
I am proud to have known Larry even before he was associated with Zamir– from our days at Yavneh, which was essentially the birthplace of the chorus. May you both go “Me Chayil l’Chayil” and continue to make Zamir such a great organization and cultural gem.

    Larry & Jill,
You two are SO deserving of this honor!
Both of you have been such an integral part of my life with Zamir. It has been an honor, a privilege, and a joy to share the music, the memories (and the risers!).
Larry – I will never, ever forget you reaching for my hand as we were singing on tour in Eastern Europe, knowing I needed your strength and support to make it through the performance. My eyes still fill with tears even now…….
You both have elevated the importance of Jewish music and community, and I join everyone in thanking you for your passion and dedication.
Much love on this wonderful occasion!
I’ll be tuning in from Chicago!
    Love, Helen

    Dear Larry and Jill,
You are the most deserving of honorees. We can’t think of anyone who more exemplifies a love for serious Jewish music, both as accomplished performers and as philanthropic benefactors. Your support of all things Zamir Chorale of Boston and the wider world of Jewish music, including our beloved HaZamir, is laudable and beyond extraordinary. We are so delighted that you are being celebrated this evening – MAGI’A LAKHEM – MAZAL TOV!!!
    Love, Lynn and Brian

    Dear Larry and Jill,

You, Larry, were always giving and supportive of Zamir in so many ways. This was a well deserved honor for you! Though I haven’t had the pleasure of knowing Jill, from what I have heard and read, you are a dynamic duo! May you be blessed with the strength to continue your efforts for our beloved Zamir!
